Byzantine Empress Irene of Athens was overthrown by the finance minister, Nikephoros I

Empress Irene of Athens (797–802)

Overthrown in a palace coup by her own finance minister, Nikephoros, with the help of the palace guards. 😺

Surrounded by soldiers, Irene had no choice but to hand over the crown. Her top eunuch advisors, Staurakios and Aetios, could do nothing to stop it. St. Tarasius begged for mercy, but the guards stayed loyal to Nikephoros.

Soon after, Nikephoros I was crowned emperor, and his son Staurakios became a co-emperor, starting a new dynasty in Byzantium.
